An

is a type of police car operated by British Law enforcement. ARVs are crewed by Authorized Firearms Officers to respond to incidents believed to involve firearms or other high-risk
situations. ARVs are specially adapted and modified to accommodate
specialist equipment, along with the transportation of armed officers to
a scene of an incident.
Here we have 4 City of London Police ARV’s (A BMW 5-Series and 3 BMW X5's) escorting two trucks from the Bank of England. Notice the yellow dots on the windshields; this and a yellow dot on the roof indicates an ARV, primarily on City of London and Metropolitan Police.
Here we have 4 Metropolitan Police BMW X5 ARV’s out on a shout; 2 in Battenburg Markings, one unmarked, and one still in the former “jam sandwich” livery.
Here is a British Transport Police Volvo XC70 responding to a call.
This Met Diplomatic Protection Group X5 mounts the sidewalk in order to advance to it’s call. The DPG cars are easy to spot due to their red paintjobs.
Of course, it wasn’t all X5's. Here is an older video of a BMW 525D (diesel). Note the fact that it’s low to the ground, due to the ammount of equipment and gear the cops inside are carrying.
Lets step away from London a bit, and see two Unmarked Audi A6 Wagons of the West Midlands Police out on shouts.
Okay, Heathrow Airport is covered by The Met, but this video from MPS Kingston Police shows a Mitsubishi Shogun ARV from Heathrow, including the safe used to hold the guns.
Speaking of Armed Response at airports, Gatwick Airport is covered by Sussex Police, and Inside Gatwick Episode 1 covers the Security at Gatwick, and how much training and testing it takes to be an AFO (Authorized Firearms Officer) at the Airport.
3 BMW X5's ARV’s and a Ford Focus Estate Dog Squad rush to the Notting Hill Carnival, possibly to assist regular officers with a car stop that has firearm markers on it.
And lets end this with an episode of “Send in the Dogs” where this episode focuses on the Police Dogs of the Met, with one Dog Squad team training to serve alongside the Specialist Firearms Command.

I like how, with the exception of the unmarked units, the vehicles are painted for high visibility. American cops generally like to sneak up on you.

Your link is Kinja’d, btw.

The ambulances in my county (Travis County, TX), are definitely easy to see.

Interesting that despite the bright mile-away markings, the police vehicles do not appear to have any unique number plate format.

I thought in Englandland these were your police cars

The thought never occurred to me since most don’t have guns... you then need to coordinate how to get guns there when they are needed.

Meanwhile, in (admittedly gun crazy) America:

If you need to deliver guns to the police, the vehicle itself should have a gun. Perhaps a minigun on the top.

Wait, if not all cops have guns, how will they shoot minorities?

It’s worse in Canada
Yes they are both marked cruisers. Black on black and white on white (the white one isn’t even reflective)

“ARVs are crewed by Authorised Firearms Officers to respond to incidents believed to involve firearms or other high-risk situations”
This arises because those of us in civilised countries - and they are only a few such - have police forces which are not routinely armed.
As a consequence, shootings by the police are remarkably rare.

Nope. Why would they?

Ooh. That’s neat. I have a Matchbox BMW X5 in that livery on my desk.
Also, on a side note, I didn’t know you could get the new X5 with halogen reflector headlights overseas. I just assumed that Xenons were standard.

We’ve got those in Austin, too. This picture isn’t very good, but it has the same shield and small lettering as the black and whites, but it’s barely reflective.

It’s horrible! LOL. It’s a clear money grab as actually showing visibility slows people down, etc.

Depends on the comparison I suppose.
The murder rate is just over a quarter of that in the US, so there’s that.

I’ve just never lived in a place where government cars follow the same registration format as private cars, so it surprised me.

We got fooled twice by dem redcoats, never again. So naturally we have our police outfitted to be able to take on the militaries of small nations
![]() 10/12/2016 at 22:32 |

The only vehicles really to have unique number plate format are military vehicles (oh and diplomatic vehicles).

ARVs are also routinely called out to any form of weapon, even a knife.
Usually because all are taser trained while not a high amount of beat bobbies are.

London and some surrounding areas have several markings on.
A yellow dot on each side of the vehicle as you pointed out is to denote an armed unit.
A green dot over the fuel filler door means it’s petrol.
A black dot over the fuel filler door means it’s diesel.
Amber rotator/beacon/strobe above the main lightbar unit means it can go ‘airside’ at airports.

And maybe just that.
Limeyland history, even relatively recent, isn’t so gentle.

An interesting couple of units are the London Underground rescue units, simply a fire engine decked out in underground rescue equipment. Because of the way blue light legislation is, it means the London Underground rescue vehicles couldn’t use blue lights which meant taking longer to get to the scene. Though you’d argue rightly that any form of incident underground in the heart of a city is an emergency requiring a rapid response. To get round this, so they can get to their destination faster, they crewed the vehicle with a police officer as the driver. The first vehicles of it’s type merely said ‘emergency’ on the front and ‘emergency rescue unit’ on the side, the next ones carried full police markings on the front and rear of the British Transport Police with some of the earlier ones being re-liveried to match.

Something you can say about every place on earth I’m afraid, America especially included. You’ll recall that US expansion to the west was a process involving the provocation of wars with other colonising powers, genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Hmm and who settled Murka? You’ll recall that the British empire raped and looted 40% of the planet for centuries, and has never answered to its deeds on any continent. Maybe we can give an uneasy thanks to the German Nasties for pushing them over the edge into the slowly but steadily more irrelevant island of today. If only they could have done more. Oh well, good riddance to bad rubbish.
Civilised.....LOOLOLOLOOOOLOLOL. The only thing more arrogant and hypocritical on this planet than an ugly American or brash Chinese is a British git.

You’re probably assuming I’m American, Chinese or British...

You are assuming I assume that :)
I know you are from Ireland (your name gives it away, but maybe of British descent given the complaints about Murka), and can also put on amusing airs of being “civilised”. Canuckistanians do it too.
